A reminder to Jet Ski Owners:
- As of 1/1/2004 anyone operating a jet ski is required to have completed a NYS boating safety course.
- Continued misuse of jet ski's could result in them being banned from the lakes.
Comprising 8 percent of all of the state's water craft, personal water craft are involved in 30 percent of all accidents on the water. When jet skis are operated improperly, they
pose a serious danger to the safety, health, privacy and beauty of local waterfronts. As of 1/1/2004 anyone operating a Personal Water craft (PWC) commonly called a Jet Ski in New York State must complete a boating
safety course. The course teaches the particulars of handling a PWC, the rules of the road, reading buoys, boat handling, and other boating safety related topics. In addition legislation sponsored in 2000 gave
villages, cities and towns the power to regulate the use and operation of jet skis and other specialty prop craft. The law authorizes local municipalities to establish a PWC and specialty prop-craft regulation zone
in addition to allowing regulations to be adopted that promote the safety of individuals and to protect the interests of the municipality. Prior to this legislation, municipalities lack the legal authority to
protect their own waterways from excessive or dangerous jet ski use.
